This includes setting goals, making plans, and taking action to achieve those goals. It also includes dealing with setbacks and managing stress.

When you have mastered self-management, you will find that you are able to achieve success in all areas of your life. In this article, we will discuss the basics of self-management skills and how you can start developing these skills today!

What are the Self Management Skills?

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Setting Goals
  3. Organization
  4. Time management
  5. Self-motivation
  6. Stress management
  7. Accountability

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to reflect on one’s own thoughts, emotions, and behavior. It is an essential skill for self-management and personal growth. People who are self-aware are able to regulate their emotions, set boundaries, and make decisions that align with their values. This ability also allows people to see themselves objectively and to identify areas in which they need to grow.

Self-Awareness

Without it, it would be difficult to make positive changes in one’s life. For example, if someone is not aware of their own anger issues, they will not be motivated to seek help for managing their anger. awareness of self is thus a key ingredient in leading a happy and fulfilling life.

According to Tasha Eurich, Ph.D., who is an organizational psychologist, researcher, and New York Times bestselling author, in her Harvard Business Review article, “What Self-Awareness Really Is (and How to Cultivate It)”.

She states that there are two types. Internal self-awareness is “how clearly we see our own values, passions, aspirations, fit with our environment, reactions (including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses), and impact on others.”

External self-awareness is how much we understand how other people perceive us.

Setting Goals

There’s no question that setting goals are important. By having something to strive for, we push ourselves to improve and achieve new things. But what’s often overlooked is the importance of setting big goals. Goals are not tasks.

Setting Goals

Oftentimes, people set goals that aren’t lofty or ambitious enough that they’re almost impossible to achieve. Big goals stretch what we may consider possible.

So when you’re setting your goals, make sure they are the big hairy audacious goals (BHAG). That way, even if you fall short you win big.

Approach goal setting with a 10X mindset (big goals, followed by big action equals big success). Grant Cardone’s book, “The 10X Rule” lays this out. A normal goal would be, “I want to make $100,000”. BORING!!! Let’s 10X it and give it some substance!

My income is over $1 million dollars per month. I was able to donate to the charities that I love and take part in more opportunities. We took en Around the World Expedition and it was so memorable.

What happens if I fall short? Maybe only 5X or worse 2X, well that would be more than my original. Align your goals and actions with a larger purpose to generate additional motivation and energy.

When setting your own goals reject ‘Realistic’ goals and pursue extraordinary goals.

Organization

Practicing good self-management skills can help you improve your workplace performance and positively. Being organized is important for that reason. It can help you to be more efficient and productive, both at work and at home. It can also help to reduce stress levels, as you will have a better handle on what needs to be done and when.

Organization

Furthermore, being organized can also help you to save money, as you will be less likely to make impulse purchases or forget about coupons and discounts. Finally, being organized can also help you to stay healthy, as it can encourage you to exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet. In short, there are many benefits to being organized, making it well worth the effort.

Develop an organizational system that works for you. Some great software that I use:

  • Notion
  • Evernote
  • Google Calendar
  • Outlook
  • Trello
  • Momentum

These help me stay on top of daily tasks, meet deadlines, other team members, personal development goals, a valuable asset, and they really help me focus on what is important.

Time Management

Time management is one of the key self-management skills. If you can’t control your time, you’ll never be able to control yourself. That’s why it’s important to set goals and deadlines for yourself, and then stick to them. It’s also important to learn how to say “no.” If you’re constantly saying “yes” to everyone and everything, you’ll quickly find yourself overwhelmed and stressed out.

Time management

There is no such thing as “multi-tasking”, it is Context switching or task switching. According to statistics, you may lose up to 40% of your productivity when you multitask. “The True Cost of Multi-Tasking” by Susan Weinschenk Ph.D.

Finally, it’s important to take breaks when you need them. Prioritize one thing at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or burned out, taking a few minutes to relax and rejuvenate will help you regain focus and energy. By following these simple tips, you can take control of your time and start living a more productive, stress-free life.

Self-Motivation

Strong self-management skills such as self-motivation are the driving force that enables us to achieve our goals. It is the inner desire that compels us to take action and persevere in the face of adversity. Self-motivation is what separates those who accomplish great things from those who only dream of greatness. And yet, it is often said that self-motivation is something that cannot be taught.

Self-Motivation

While it may be true that some people are naturally more driven than others, there are still ways to cultivate self-motivation. One approach is to develop a strong sense of self-management. This involves setting clear goals and taking consistent action towards their achievement.

It also means staying focused and disciplined, even when things get tough. By taking control of our own lives and destiny, we can develop the self-motivation needed to achieve our dreams.

Things that I do to stay motivated. I have motivators around my work area like pictures, printed quotes, and family pictures. I cut down on the negative information and people in my sphere. Keep learning new things. Watch motivational speeches. Write down and track accomplishments, this helps out a lot when you are down in the weeds. Come up and take stock in what you have done.

My #1 way to stay motivated is to help others. This gets me pumped! If I can help someone with something that I know or am able to do that is such a charge of motivating energy it is drug-like and addictive.

Stress Management

Anybody who has ever experienced stress knows that it can be extremely debilitating. Not only does it affect our mental and emotional wellbeing, but it can also take a toll on our physical health. Mondays have a 20% higher rate of heart attacks than other days. Could this be because that is the start of the workweek? That’s why it’s so important to learn how to manage stress effectively.

Stress Management

There are a number of different ways to do this, but one of the most important is self-management. This means taking charge of your own stress levels and being proactive about reducing them. There are a number of different techniques that can be used for this, such as relaxation exercises, positive thinking, and time management. The key is to find what works for you and to make sure that you stick with it.

If you’re struggling to manage your stress levels, don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional. There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance. In fact, it’s one of the bravest things you can do. By taking action and getting the help you need, you can be happier and healthier.

Accountability

Being accountable means being in control of your own actions and taking responsibility for your own choices. It is an important quality to have in all aspects of life, from personal relationships to professional success. When you are accountable, you are able to manage yourself effectively and make decisions that are in your best interests.

Accountability

Tony Robbins, Grant Cardone, Gary Vaynerchuk, Les Brown, Jocko Willink, David Osborn, and my late Father are the people that I turn to for accountability. Am I holding myself accountable to my beliefs and values, are my “shoulds” “must”? Have I truly done all that I could?

This can be a challenge at times, but it is always worth it to be in control of your own being. When you are accountable, you are also more likely to achieve your goals. You will be less likely to make excuses or blame others when things go wrong. Instead, you will take responsibility for your own mistakes and learn from them. This attitude of accountability will help you to reach your full potential in whatever you do.

With the help of accountability coaching, you’ll make a plan, set goals and unlock your potential. This can be friends, peers, mentors, or a paid service.

6 Ways to Build Self Management Skills

Prioritize your health and well-being.

Eating healthy and sleeping soundly will help you do your best work and collaborate productively with others. To relieve tension, boost your well-being, and come up with new ideas for each day’s to-do list, make mental health and self-care a priority.

Know your strengths.

If you know your strengths and limitations, you’ll be better prepared to decide which activities are best for you. A successful entrepreneur knows how to create a team that has complementary skills.

Focus on one task at a time.

Organize your day’s to-do list in order of importance and urgency to reduce stress. Multitasking may increase stress and provide you with more distractions, so concentrating on one activity at a time will help you get things done faster.

Develop an organizational system.

Use a physical datebook, software on your phone, or paper to-do lists to keep track of what you need to do.

Set short- and long-term goals for yourself.

You can also set goals for yourself as a freelancer or business owner. Having objectives helps you figure out what you want to get out of your work, whether it’s personal growth, attempting new things, or working your way up the ladder. Make sure to keep track of your progress and set check-ins with your supervisor to congratulate yourself on accomplishments.

Strive for Consistency

We don’t need to search for these uncommon bursts of energy; we should concentrate on 1% progress each day. This is something that James Clear discusses in Atomic Habits. There’s no need to put out our full effort all of the time. If we can be decent on a daily basis, we’ll get a lot farther than someone who goes all out and burns out.

Traders often desire consistency when they talk about it. They wish to make consistent and regular profits every week, with minimal drawdowns and losses.
