David Hartshorn primarily writes David Tries, but the staff includes various others.

David is headquartered in Virginia. Now, who’s this David guy anyway?

Alaska 2022

Thanks for asking! Let’s see… I have worked many jobs, from helping my Father and Grandfather move people from coast to coast, 13+ hours a day jackhammering for the pipelines in Nevada, doing some time in fast food, prep cooking, and janitorial services. I joined the Army in December 2001. I was medically retired in 2009 and did some Government contracts overseas and domestically before becoming a Government employee.

I have several academic credentials, if that’s interesting to you, including an Associates Degree in Computer Technology from Central Texas College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology and Network Security from Western Govaners University, a Master’s in Cyber Security, and Information Assurance from Western Govaners Univerity. Leadership Education and Development Program from the Army Management Staff College.

I generally skip the alphabet soup after my name, though. I think it would be funny here: CISSP, CCSP, CEH, A+, Network+, Security+, Linux+, Project+, CLNP, CIOS, CLNP, CSSS, SIS, CIW WFA, CIW WDS,  CCENT, CCNA, MTA, MCP, MCSE, MCTIP, LPI Linux Administrator, LPIC-1. Non-IT – PADI Open Water, Advanced, National Geographic Scuba Diver, Advanced Executive Protection (CPC), Personal Security Detail (PSD), CPR First Aid AED, TCCC, CLS, and I think that is it for now 😉

On the career side, I have crafted an IT generalist path that has allowed me to experience all, if not most, facets of the IT field. I started in the Army in Signal Operations and was re-classed as a new 25B Information Technology Specialist. From there, I started working my way from Help Desk tier 1 & 2 support to Systems Administrator to SharePoint/Web Administrator to Customer Service Branch Supervisor to IT Operations Manager to now Manager of the Program and Engineering Services Division. I would say that I have been around the block.

In parallel, I learned to blog (Duh), create and edit videos, market content, work on vehicles, build structures, aquaponics, three gun competition, primitive survival, become a Father and Husband (now ex-husband, and so many other things. It is crazy.

I now split my time between my day job and advice here on DavidTries, producing content for David Tries YouTube channel and writing about fatherhood, film, cars, and men’s lifestyle topics on my popular SurvivingAdventures site. Along with a lot of other things, depending on the week!
