How to Get a Motorcycle Running After It’s Been Sitting (My 883 Sportster Revival)

So there I was, standing in my garage, staring at my 883 Sportster like Gandalf staring down the Balrog. Except instead of “You shall not pass,” the bike’s message was simpler: you shall not start.

If you’ve got a motorcycle that’s been sitting — for a season, a year, or that vague stretch of time we dads call “since the kids started sports” — this is the exact process I used to figure out why mine wouldn’t run, what it actually cost me, and where the fix went from “clean it” to “upgrade it.” No mechanic certification required. I don’t have one either.

The short answer up front (because I know you’re standing in the garage on your phone): a motorcycle that won’t start after sitting almost always has a fuel problem. Old gas turns to varnish, varnish clogs the carburetor, and no amount of cranking fixes chemistry. Check battery and spark first because they’re fast and cheap — but the carb is usually your villain.

Why Motorcycles Die When They Sit

Engines are like people: they’re healthiest when they work regularly. Let one sit, and three things happen, in order of how fast they’ll ruin your day.

Gas goes bad in as little as 30 days. Modern ethanol-blend fuel absorbs moisture and starts breaking down within a month. After several months, you don’t have fuel anymore — you have a varnish-scented candle that smells like regret. That varnish coats everything it touches, and the tiny brass jets inside your carburetor have passages about the size of a pencil lead. It doesn’t take much.

Batteries self-discharge. A motorcycle battery loses charge just sitting there, and lead-acid batteries that sit dead for months sulfate, which is battery-speak for “permanently sad.”

Rubber and seals dry out. Fuel lines, carb gaskets, tires. Everything rubber ages faster when it’s not being used, which is deeply unfair and also true of my knees.

What You’ll Need

Nothing exotic. This is a diagnosis, not a surgery:

Step 1: Check the Battery First (5 Minutes, Might Be Free)

First rule of a dead bike: eliminate the cheap suspects before you accuse the expensive ones. This is basic troubleshooting — the same thing I did for years in IT. You don’t rebuild the server because someone unplugged the monitor.

Put the multimeter on the battery terminals. You’re looking for 12.6+ volts on a healthy, rested battery. Mine read 12.03 — charge. Anything under about 12.4 means charge it; under 10.5 and sitting for months, it may be sulfated and done.

Do this before anything else, because a weak battery causes symptoms that look like fuel or spark problems, and you’ll chase ghosts for a weekend. Ask me how I know.

Step 2: Confirm You Have Spark (10 Minutes)

Pull a spark plug (they’re on the side of the cylinders on a Sportster — one socket, done), reconnect it to the plug wire, ground the threads against the engine, and crank. You want a visible blue spark.

While the plug is out, read it like tea leaves:

  • Black and sooty — running rich (or lots of failed start attempts, guilty)
  • Oily and wet — different problem, bigger conversation
  • Tan/light brown — that’s a healthy plug from before the bike sat

Mine looked good. Plugs are cheap — if yours have been in there since a previous presidential administration, just replace them while you’re here.

Step 3: Open the Tank and Brace Yourself

This is where my diagnosis stopped being a mystery. I opened the fuel cap and got hit with the smell — old gas doesn’t smell like gas; it smells like paint thinner that gave up on its dreams.

Drain the tank completely into a pan (your local hazardous waste facility takes old fuel; your storm drain does not). While it drains, look inside the tank with a flashlight for rust. A little surface discoloration is survivable. Flaking rust means a bigger job — tank cleaning or lining — before you put fresh fuel anywhere near your carb. I did this last year.

Step 4: The Carburetor — Find the Real Villain

Here’s the chain of logic: the engine has spark, it’s getting air, and it cranks — so if it still won’t fire with fresh fuel, the fuel isn’t making it through the carburetor. On my 2000s-era 883, that’s the stock CV (constant velocity) carb, a design old enough to rent a car.

After months of sitting full of ethanol gas, the pilot jet — the tiny passage that feeds the engine at idle and startup — was almost certainly gummed shut with varnish. This is the single most common reason a stored bike won’t start. Not a Harley thing. A physics thing.

Step 5: Clean, Rebuild, or Upgrade? (The Fork in the Road)

Now you’ve got three options, and this is a genuine decision, not a fake one I’m setting up to sell you something:

Option 1 — Clean it (~$20). Pull the carb, disassemble, soak the jets in carb cleaner, blow everything out with compressed air, and reassemble. Totally valid, and if your bike is otherwise mint and stock, do this first.

Option 2 — Rebuild it (~$40–60). Same as above, plus a rebuild kit: new gaskets, O-rings, needle valve. The right call if the carb is original and the rubber bits are as old as the bike.

Option 3 — Upgrade it. Put the money toward a better carburetor instead of restoring a 30-year-old design to factory-1990s performance.

I went with Option 3 — a Mikuni HSR42 smoothbore — because I am dumb 😉

That difference goes on the Total Saved counter → — the running tally of every dollar this channel doesn’t hand to a shop. It’s early. The number gets bigger.

Common Mistakes (I Made at Least Two of These)

Cranking endlessly on old gas. You’re not going to win. You’re just flooding the engine and draining the battery you just charged.

Buying parts before diagnosing. The parts cannon is expensive, and its aim is terrible. Multimeter first, wallet second.

Skipping the tires and brakes. The goal is a bike that runs and stops. Check tire date codes (4-digit number on the sidewall — week/year) and squeeze the brakes before your first ride. A bike that starts but doesn’t stop is just an exciting way to meet your deductible.

Ignoring the oil. If the bike sat for a year-plus, change the oil before you ride it in anger. Condensation happens.

FAQ

How long can a motorcycle sit before the gas goes bad? Modern ethanol fuel starts degrading in about 30 days and is genuinely problematic by 3–6 months. Untreated gas after a year is varnish. Fuel stabilizer extends this to a year-plus, which is why the smartest sentence in this article is: put stabilizer in before storage, not regret in after.

Will a motorcycle start with old gas? Sometimes, badly. If it’s been under ~3 months, it may run rough and clear up. Beyond that, drain it — running varnish through the fuel system turns a $0 problem into a carb job.

How much does a shop charge to get a stored motorcycle running? Expect $150–300 just for diagnosis, and $500–1,200+ if it needs carb work, which it usually does. That’s the honest math behind doing it yourself.

A bike that won’t start after sitting isn’t broken — it’s stuck, and there’s a difference. Work the chain: battery, spark, fuel, carb. Every step is cheap, none of it requires special talent, and the worst-case outcome is that you learn exactly what to tell the mechanic instead of handing over a blank check.
